Microsoft Acquires Bethesda

The deal includes the studios behind franchises like The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Wolfenstein, Doom, Dishonored, Prey, and Quake, along with upcoming games like Starfield. Could this deal steer some of the Playstation fans towards Xbox?

Microsoft’s Phil Spencer announced on the Xbox blog that their family has grown with the acquisition of ZeniMax Media, the company that owns id Software, Arkane Studios, MachineGames, Tango Gameworks and publisher Bethesda Softworks with its Bethesda Game Studios and ZeniMax Online Studios.

A $7.5 billion deal that could potentially strike a major blow to Sony since all of the games produced by ZeniMax are beloved by a huge number of fans across the globe. If buying a PS5 prevents those fans from playing them, they could be forced to switch teams this generation.

Even if you’ve recently got into gaming, you’ve already heard of some of the games that Bethesda’s responsible for, games like DOOM, The Evil Within, Dishonored, Prey, Wolfenstein, Skyrim, and Fallout (And this game called Wet that’s a classic favorite of mine).

However, you can breathe a sigh of relief at the confirmation of Bethesda that console exclusivity will be studied on a case by case basis, meaning some of their games will be on the PS5 as well. A recent example of this is Obsidian, the team behind Fallout New Vegas, that was acquired two year ago by Microsoft and developed The Outer Worlds. It wasn’t an Xbox exclusive and did in fact release on the PS4 so for now we’re keeping our hopes up.

We can all agree that the PS5 will definitely outsell the Xbox Series during the initial launch phase but if Microsoft keeps acquiring more studios and keeps offering more value for their customers, not to mention offering full backwards compatibility, there’s a big chance that they could be winning the console war by the end of the next generation.
