The Assassin’s creed sequel that I want

That no one else wants.

Much to my chagrin, Ubisoft had decided in recent years to push The Assassin’s Creed series into a direction that I’m not much of a fan of. I’ve always had an idea of an Assassin’s Creed sequel that not many people might agree with. Read on to find out what kind of a sequel I want.

One of my favorite last gen games was Splinter Cell: Conviction. Pure testosterone of a game. It was John Wick before John Wick was even a thing. The plotline was basic. Pretty much the same as that of Liam Neeson’s Taken (something bad happened to your daughter and you’re basically a “US government employee” if you catch my drift).

To top it all off, Sam Fisher is voiced by Michael Ironside. A man whose voice rivals that of Neeson’s in terms of badass-ness. Sam Fisher was always one of my most cherished gaming figures. And Conviction elevated his status to a completely new level in my eyes. If you think I’m exaggerating, just watch this trailer.

By now, you’re probably wondering why I’m rambling about a 10-year-old game.

The trifecta of stealth

According to the game’s creative director Maxime Béland (Yeah, that guy). Conviction was supposed to include so much more. It was even supposed to have blending into crowds as a stealth mechanic, which was supposedly scrapped during development. Sounds familiar?

The game also had you going around assassinating henchmen and terrorists by climbing any pipe you lay your eyes on and shimmying across ledges. As if you’re playing a modern day Assassin’s creed linear game. Which is exactly the Assassin’s creed sequel I want.

Now before you boo me and throw your rotten tomatoes at me, let me try to change your mind about this.

I bet you’re thinking by now “But we already have watchdogs”. Well no, that’s not what I had in mind at all. Watch dogs doesn’t even have a full-fledged parkour system. Comparing both games is like comparing apples to oranges.

Let’s talk about a bald guy

I assume any gamer loves Hitman. It’s by far the only game that’s universally loved by almost everyone who’s ever held a controller. I consider Hitman, Splinter Cell and Assassin’s creed as kindred souls. Agent 47, Sam Fisher and Desmond are all well trained assassins that infiltrate their target’s environment. Quietly killing them while remaining undercover before slipping away undiscovered.

Agent 47 in the reboot occasionally shows off those climbing skills of his. That are almost as good as Fisher’s or Desmond’s. He even uses the same social stealth mechanics found in an Assassin’s Creed game. So if we enjoy all three games, then why wouldn’t we enjoy a game that’s set during the modern day? That’s semi-linear. And that revolves around eliminating a target using our own creativity and the tools at our disposal?

Imagine having a skyscraper as a playground, climbing the tall building and going through the windows trying to sneak around and neutralize your target using a hidden blade. How awesome would that be?

They already gave us a taste of it in AC: Brotherhood

I’ll answer your next question: Why would it be an Assassin’s creed game then? Seems to me as if you want a new Splinter Cell sequel.

Well yes, I want a Splinter Cell sequel, but you’ve neglected an important aspect of the Assassin’s creed games that even Ubisoft seem to have neglected:

The modern day timeline

Sure, most people think that Desmond’s story was simply a medium to justify the constant hopping between protagonists. Each located in a different time period.

For me though, what held these games together and made them the masterpieces that they are is the existence of the bigger picture, of the conspiracy theories and the apples of Eden that glued together all of those storylines.

Ezio’s story wouldn’t have been as interesting if it was just a simple revenge story. Take away the modern day stuff, and the games lose all coherence. Just look at how the story fell apart as soon as they ditched the modern day timeline. The few missions that they had us play as Desmond were pure gold, and I definitely would’ve played a fully-fledged game that consisted mainly of Desmond missions.
